About the Guild

Dry stone walls in Yorkshire

Yorkshire Dry Stone Walling Guild is a registered Charity offering membership to all those having an interest in this craft. As an organisation, it is based and operates primarily in North Yorkshire, but membership is open to people from all over the world.

The Guild co-operates with farmers, landowners, councils and other interested bodies with a view to preserving walls constructed in this way, and is opposed to their needless destruction.

By giving talks and demonstrations, in particular in Schools, the Guild hopes to educate people, and encourage an interest in the history, construction techniques, geographical and heritage value of dry stone walls. As a part of this educational process, the Guild demonstrates at County Shows and similar events with miniature walls and various artefacts found in old walls during repair on display, and constructs a wall for people to see.

The Guild has a skills qualification scheme to maintain standards of workmanship by those making their living building walls, and we have a growing lady membership.

The Guild also runs walling courses, operated by Guild approved and insured instructors for individuals wishing to gain an insight into the craft, either as direct applicants, or through educational and other collective organisations
